Replacing the functions of natural light without trying to imitate it
A bathroom without a window can feel dark, cramped, or cold. However, this doesn't have to be the case. Well-distributed lighting, balanced colors, and carefully chosen materials can create a bright and pleasant space at any time of day.
The main mistake is trying to compensate for the lack of a window with a single, very powerful ceiling light or with entirely white walls. A successful bathroom relies instead on several light sources, each fulfilling a specific function.
The goal is not to create a fake daylight, but to obtain comfortable light for moving around, getting ready, putting on makeup and using the shower.

Plan for multiple layers of lighting

In a windowless bathroom, every area depends on electric lighting. A single light fixture placed in the center of the ceiling often produces harsh shadows and leaves the walls, mirror, or shower in semi-darkness.

The light must reach the face evenly
The vanity area is generally the most demanding. It must allow for shaving, applying makeup, and performing skincare routines without distorting colors or accentuating shadows.
The most effective solution is often to install two vertical light sources on either side of the mirror. The light then falls relatively evenly on the face.
When lateral space is insufficient, one can use:
a horizontal wall light above the mirror;

Not all illuminated mirrors offer the same quality. Some models only have decorative backlighting that illuminates the wall without projecting enough light onto the face. It's important to distinguish between ambient lighting and truly functional lighting.

Choosing the right color temperature

Check the color rendering
White light does not always accurately reproduce colors.
Two light bulbs with the same color temperature can render colors very differently. The color rendering index, or CRI, measures how accurately a light source reproduces colors.
For mirror lighting, a CRI of at least 90 is preferable. It allows for better differentiation of:
skin tones;
makeup;
clothes;
hair colors;
the bathroom finishes.
According to the Department of Energy , a CRI of 90 or higher corresponds to excellent color fidelity.
This characteristic is particularly important in a room without natural light. No daylight is there to correct an artificial light source that would make the colors appear dull, greenish, or excessively yellow.
Plan for an adaptable intensity
The need for light changes depending on the time of day and use.
A windowless bathroom needs to be bright enough in the morning, but high intensity can become uncomfortable at night.
Dimmer switches allow the room to be adapted to different uses:
morning preparation;
precise care;
relaxing bath;
night passage;
cleaning;
ambient lighting.

a wardrobe;

Don't neglect the ceiling
