Renovating your bathroom is an exciting project, but before starting work, an important question arises: do you need a permit? In Quebec, and particularly in Montreal, some projects require municipal authorization, while others can be completed freely.
Work that generally does not require a permit
Purely aesthetic or finishing renovations can in principle be carried out without a permit:
Replacement of ceramic or flooring
Painting or wallpapering work
Change of furniture (vanity, mirror, accessories)
Installation of new faucets without modifying the plumbing system
Please note: even when a permit is not required, the work must comply with the current standards of the Quebec Building Code.
Work requiring a permit
Certain more technical or structural interventions require prior authorization, particularly when they involve:
A modification to the building structure (e.g. opening of a load-bearing wall)
Moving plumbing elements (bath, sink, toilet)
Electrical work (adding sockets, moving light fixtures)
An intervention on insulation, ventilation or ducts
Requirements vary from one municipality to another. In Montreal, each borough may have its own rules. It is therefore strongly recommended to consult the urban planning department before beginning work.
Who should apply for a permit?
Typically, the homeowner is responsible for applying for a permit. However, when a project is entrusted to a specialized company like BonBain , we handle all the necessary administrative procedures, including applying for a permit if required.
